1. The Internet
With the advent of the Information Age, the Internet, as a new medium, has come into our life. Nowadays, getting online has become popular in China, especially in large cities. People believe that it is another earth-shaking technological revolution that makes globalization possible.
The popularity of the Internet arisen from its great utility. With the Net, it is convenient and fast for people to get a variety of information just by pressing some key buttons. E-mail is another popular use which can transmit messages quickly and accurately. The Internet also has other applications in medicine, education, business, etc.
With so many uses and advantages, there is no doubt that more and more people will be wired to the Internet --- the information expressway. However, some problems also arise with its development. The net viruses and hackers, for example, are threatening the Web users. Besides, many Web ads are annoying and misleading, to say nothing of indecent pictures offered in cyberspace. Therefore, effective solutions to these problems must be worked out, and efforts should be made to safeguard Net security.
2. Going to Cybercafes
With the rapid development of computer science, cybercafes have sprung up like mushrooms in recent years. Located near school campuses, they are full of Internet worms (also called Web-parasites) who are mostly teenagers and college students.
Young people like to go to cybercafes for different purposes. Some expect to widen their horizons by taking part in online forums, visiting their favourite websites, or downloading useful information. Some want to have fun and kill time by browsing the Web or chatting with their Web-pals. Others are addicted to playing online games. There are also some very young children who neglect their schoolwork due to the addition to playing games, which arouses strong protests made by parents against some bar owners for their allowing underage children to play in the bars.
I like to go to Internet cafes because I have learned many things there. I think the online community is an extension of college life. As long as we have enough self-restraint, going to the cybercafes will do us good.
pment of advanced software products to safeguard the computer system.
3.The Teacher-Student Relationship A good teacher –student relationship is very important for education in many ways. Needless to say, it can double teaching effect, because in a friendly atmosphere, both teaching and learning are made easier. Most importantly, with a good relationship, a teacher may influence students in and out of their study, even in the rest of their lives.
To achieve a good teacher-student relationship, teachers should have deep love for their work and their students. They should also have certain knowledge about psychology, which is indispensable if the teachers want to understand their students better. Moreover, timely advice and continuous encouragement from the teacher can not only guide students in their study and life, but also serve as a bridge connecting the hearts of teachers and students.
As students, they ought to respect teachers and have confidence in them. Whenever in difficulties, they had better turn to the teacher for help and advice. Better communication definitely results in better understanding between students and teachers and in efficient teaching and learning.
4. How to Spend Our Leisure Hours Recreations are important in people’s life. After a day’s work or study, people should relax their muscles and nerves, otherwise, accumulation of tiredness and tension in one’s body and mind will result in low efficiency in performance, uncomfortable feeling in the body, and finally poor health.
What recreations are good depends on individuals. There are generally two kinds of recreations: physical and intellectual. If you are an office worker or a student, you’d better enjoy some physical activities, such as running or swimming. If you do physical work, you can try some hobbies as reading books or playing chess. Choices for recreations are unlimited.
I have many interests and I always try to spare time to enjoy myself. I regularly play table tennis to relax my brain after hard work. I like making things with paper, cloth and other materials to decorate my house, from which I enjoy pleasures of creation and peace of mind. Anyhow, life is but once for each. How to live happily depends on your own disposition and creation.
5.College Students in Pursuit of Adventures It is good for college students to experience hardships and arduousness, through which they may learn to be mature and capable to tackle difficulties in life. Many old sayings express the truth: True gold fears no fire. Suffering is bitter, but with sweet fruits.
However, pursuit of adventures must be restricted to a certain extent because of their dangerous quality. If one goes too far in risking his life in such activities, it is not laudable. The death of the student from Peking University in a mountain climbing adventure sounds the alarm for all of us. Young people, especially college students, are valuable property of the country. They are trained to serve the country in the future. Without life, nothing is possible.
Therefore, young people should be sober and extremely prudent about adventures. It’s better to avoid high-risk activities. Developing one’s potential is necessary, but safety must be on the first concern. In pursuit of knowledge and less adventurous attempts, students should aim at and try to acquire the ability to overcome toughness and remain undefeated at the same time.
6.Private Tutoring
Home tutoring given by college students is popular nowadays for several reasons. The most important one is that population grows faster than educational institutions, so there is a fierce competition among young people in entering colleges. As a result, students must study hard at home as well as at school. Students of any levels need tutoring, because slow students need improvement, good ones want to be better, and better best. Thus, home tutoring is getting more and more popular.
This phenomenon has brought with them many benefits to college students. First, students with financial problems can earn some money to support their study. Second, students can improve their own study after doing some tutoring. Last, tutoring experience is useful when students look for jobs.
I don’t do any tutoring, because I have no financial problems, and I need more time to prepare for graduate studies. I know working experience is important for a college student. I will see what I can do when I am not so busy.
7.
The Choice of Leisure Activities
College students have different kinds of leisure activities. According to their nature, they can be classified into two types: group activities and individual activities. Some students like group activities better. They think these activities, such as playing football, having an interesting conversation, or having a holiday outing, contribute a lot to developing their ability to get along with people. The experience of group work helps increase their sense of cooperation and competition. It makes them both physically and mentally healthy.
Some students prefer individual activities. They think, in group work they have to subject their personal schedule to the arrangement of group activities, and thus their freedom is limited. By contrast, individual pursuit can take place anytime. For example, one can listen to his favorite record between the classes, have a walk on campus later in the afternoon, play the violin after supper and read an interesting story before going to bed. He can have a regular schedule which benefit both his studies and rest.
Both group and individual activities have strengths and weaknesses. So personally I prefer a balance of both activities. I need company to talk and play with, but I also like to be left alone sometimes. Especially when I’m reading, I don’t want to be disturbed. Whatever forms, leisure activities are an indispensable part of college life. They are not only a good means of relaxation, but also can help develop our comprehensive ability, not merely academic ability.
8.
Multimedia Instruction
With the help of computers and projectors, more and more university courses adopt a brand-new method---multimedia instruction. It demonstrates plenty of advantages compared with traditional blackboard lecturing. For teachers, they no longer have to write painstakingly on the blackboard. This remarkably reduces their exposure to chalk dust, which is harmful to their health. For students, it is more visually attractive. The use of various colors, beautiful pictures, pleasant music and even the process in which teacher projects the material onto the screen make learning an enjoyable thing. What’s more, multimedia instruction offers much more information than traditional methods do within the same period of time.
But multimedia is not always very effective; it also has its disadvantages. Firstly, making good courseware is no easy job, especially for those elderly teachers who are not quite familiar with computers. Secondly, it is not convenient for students to go over lessons because they have to use computers to do so but not everyone owns one. Finally, the equipment may sometimes be out of order, resulting in an interruption or even cancellation of the class.
In spite of these disadvantages, I still prefer multimedia instruction to traditional teaching method. In some way, it reflects the trends and characteristics of modern education---teaching by using a variety of resources in combination with computer technology. I believe in the near future, multimedia instruction will become the primary teaching method in universities.
9.The Value of Time
It is well known that time is regarded as money. Actually time is much more precious than money. When money is gone, one can earn it back; but when time is gone, no one can get it back. However, time isn’t equal to money. It is a good use of time in study and work that may bring us a fortune.
In fact, not all people cherish time, especially some young people, who indulge themselves in playing video games, or chatting online, idling away time without any regret. Some people think they can afford time for enjoyment since they have plenty of it. Study and work are their later arrangements.
Time and tide wait for no man. Young people are admired just because they have plenty of time to acquire knowledge and skills, which is arduous and time-consuming, but fruitful. In other words, time is equal to every one, but the value brought by time is different, which depends on how much effort is made in one’s share of time. Remember, time is in your hand but its value is in your hard work.
10.
Online Education in China
Online education is becoming more and more popular. Students can take their class at any terminal computer without the restrictions of schools or universities. In China there are many universities that now offer online degrees. And more and more students are taking their degrees this way.
There are at least 4 advantages of E-education. First, with access to the Internet, students can overcome barriers of space and time. For example, we can make educational resources in Beijing available to students in Xinjiang. Second the access to it is easy. For example, we can have multimedia resources libraries on the Internet and students can have access to these libraries just by clicking the mouse. The third advantage is the optimization of resources. For example, we can tape the lectures given by very prominent professors and broadcast them live in China and even in the entire world through the Internet. Because of these three advantages, there is another big advantage, that is, the Internet technology makes mass education possible. As we know, it is simply impossible for the whole population to receive education on campuses. It is impossible economically or otherwise. And this is where the greatest advantage of E-education lies. It offers mass education and education for lifetime.
The biggest problem that E-education is faced with is probably the development of good courseware. We have to humanize technology, and this is the greatest challenge in courseware development.
11. Project Hope
Education plays a very important role in the modernization of China. The popularization and improvement of the quality of primary, secondary and higher education will directly strengthen the development of science and technology and economic prosperity.
However, according to recent statistics, there are over two million school-age children who cannot attend school or have to drop out simply because they live in mountainous or remote areas and their parents cannot afford their tuition fees. So a nationwide drive called “Project Hope” has been launched to offer help for these poor children to continue their schooling with the help of public donations. People are encouraged to donate money to establish new schools and help support the children with financial difficulties.
I think everyone who is better off is duty-bound to contribute to the project in order to help more children to further their schooling. Apart from sympathy and generosity, the project symbolizes love and care in human society. Of course, improving education in rural areas is of vital importance.
12. Private Universities in China
With the further development of reform and the opening-up, many new private universities have emerged. The number of people who attend this kind of university is increasing year by year.
People have different opinions about private universities. Some think not only can they provide people with more opportunities to receive a higher education but the government’s financial burden can also be lightened. Obviously, this will in turn enhance competition and promote higher education in China. Others, however, worry that the teaching quality of these schools, especially profit-oriented ones, cannot be ensured. In addition, the tuition is so high that most average Chinese people of the salaried class cannot afford to pay it.
As I see it, private universities may be a supplementary means of higher education. Although they still have many difficulties to overcome before they can further develop, they are playing a significant role in deepening China’s educational reform. I believe someday China will have her own internationally prestigious private universities like Harvard and Oxford.
13. Changing Criteria for Judging Good Students
Years ago, to be a good student simply meant to be good at academic work. On being admitted into a college or university, students usually worked very hard just strive to be “on top” because the grade was the most important criterion for judging good students.
But now the criteria are changing. There are more and more students who are concerned about things other than academic excellence. They attempt to widen their horizons and develop the ability to learn new things and master useful skills. They learn to be more independent, more creative, and more competitive to adapt themselves to the new situations of development.
Times are different. With China’s entry into the WTO, the current job market demands a large number of personnel with more practical abilities and skills. Therefore, the students today should be better prepared for challenges and competition upon graduation. Education should place more emphasis on the development of students’ ability to think and solve problems independently.
14.The Pressure Working on College Students College students are said to be God’s favored ones, but actually campus life is not full of romanticness. Students have a lot of pressures to bear. First, they must pass many exams to graduate. Then, more years of torture waits for them if they need a master’s or doctorate degree for a better position in society. For those from poor families, financial problem threatens the completion of their studies. Here is only a mention of some pressures.
Is it good or bad for college students to have much pressure? That all depends. To some people, pressure may help tap their great potentials. But, some people may react badly to great pressure, with the results of worries, sleeplessness, or even sickness. Some may have to leave college without a certificate.
In order to avoid the worst consequences, I think we should make a good judgment of ourselves and concentrate on what we can accomplish. A person who knows what to give up can get what he can, otherwise he will achieve less or nothing.
15.Be the Master of Our Fate
We often hear people say “it is destined”, which reveals that many people believe they are born to have certain fate. If seriously ill, they give up hope and wait for death, thinking it is destined. If in great difficulties, they lose heart and give in, agonizing over their unlucky fate.
Is there an unseen hand controlling human fate? No! Numerous facts prove that man is his own master. “Making a fortune with empty fists” is not a myth. There is no way to find out how many millionaires who used to be penniless and how many companies developing prosperously in the hands of
.
How can these people change their fate? The answer is no other than hard work with strong will. With strong will, an iron rod can be sharpened into a needle. Hard work costs nothing but one’s sweat and rewards one with wealth and pleasure. Those who suffer poverty have to blame on their own laziness and those who are unable to get out of difficulties are nothing but cowards. Learning to be the master of one’s own fate is not only what a person has to do, but also the real sense of a rewarding life.
16.What Are the Qualifications for the Good Youth of Today? As regards to qualifications for the good youth of today, different people have different ideas. However, most people will agree on the following criteria for the good youth.
First of all, the good youth must have moral values and deep love for their country and people, thus a sense of responsibilities, honesty, hospitality and many other noble sentiments may be cultivated in their mind. The second important aspect of being excellent is mastery of knowledge and abilities, with which they can contribute to society and enjoy a worthy life. They should also be able to exert their potential to maximum so as to be more adaptable to the changing world. Last, but not the least, some other qualities such as perseverance, toughness, decisiveness, composedness, self-confidence, etc, are all quite crucial for the young to be successful in their occupation or social life.
Certainly no one is born to possess all these qualities, but if a person keeps learning, practicing and experiencing, he will eventually become excellent.
17.Hard Life Is Good for the Young Poverty is a monster, which deprives people of many opportunities. Take poor college students as example. With less money, they eat barely enough and wear plain clothes. They would keep away from the entertainments they like but can not afford. Bitterly, they have to give up hope of graduate studies or any other further education.
However, poverty is also a “furnace”, in which a person is tempered into a great man. For example, if a person is in great difficulties, he will try to find out ways to get out. In doing so, he is trained to be wise and capable. With problems solved one after another, he achieves not only success but also confidence, which in turn enables him to brave graver storm. Just like the saying goes: “Outstanding people mostly come out of diversity.”
So people in poverty needn’t feel miserable. Take it as a chance to be tempered. Some people even look for hardships, because they know through storms the brave become braver. Hard life for the young is just like the storm tempering their will to become tough people.
18.The Difference between High School and College In high school, students are treated as children, so teachers and parents arrange everything for them. They don’t have to think what to do next; instead, they seam to be controlled and have to do whatever they are told to.
But on entering college, they are immediately considered adults. Everything is left for them to cope with. They have to think about how to learn their courses and how to wash their clothes and budget their expenses. These are so new to them that they are always at a loss. Certainly, most college students eventually manage to live independently on campus, but it’s a difficult process during which some students taste bitter failure.
From the above it can be concluded that parebt-like treatment does no good to young people in the process of their mental and physical development. High school students should have more freedom to deal with their own affairs. College students also need more guidance and help when facing new life on campus. Thus things would be easier for them when they undergo the transition from high school to college, which is an important step in young people’s lives. With each step stable forward, young people can go better and better on their road to success.
19. The College Entrance Examination As an important means of selecting candidates for colleges and universities in China, college entrance examination provides a clear objective standard to measure students' schoolwork. Undoubtedly, it has worked well in the selection of talents and helped a lot in the promotion of China’s science and economy. As to its positive aspects, for one thing, I think it is the only practical way to evaluate a student's performance in the high school. For another, the entrance examination is a comparably fair way of selecting excellent students since the only criterion of selection is the scores.
On the other hand, the entrance examination does have some negative effects. In order to score high, both high school teachers and students only focus on high marks. Students bred in such a test-oriented education may turn out to be graduates with flaws in character. To be frank, some problems have arisen along with it. The primary one is the neglect of cultivation of students’ creativity and innovativeness. Some, though with high scores in examinations, are not able to perform given tasks very well or to work out something original. Another negative effects is the failure to produce men of fine morals.
Obviously, measures should be taken to reform our educational system by shifting the major emphasis from scores of examination to the training of students’ multiple abilities. To our delight, our government has realized this. I’m sure, in the near future we will have a better college entrance examination system.
20.What Is Real Happiness
Everyone is looking for happiness; however each has his own interpretation for it. A hungry man’s happiness is plenty of food. Someone feeling cold longs for warm clothes. This kind of happiness is temporary, because after it, people may have new or more desires, which is of human nature ---- never feeling enough and content.
Is there unconditional, long lasting happiness in the world? Yes, we can easily find it in the hearts of those who are giving instead of receiving, and those who are pursuing tirelessly to realize their dreams. There are also some other kinds of true happiness, characterized by devoting to or striving for the benefits of others.
To look for real happiness, remember that giving is receiving and try to practice it, then you will be rewarded with this precious feeling in the world full of love. Remember that real pleasure lies in struggle for success, and try to practice it, then you will enjoy enriched life while human society is progressing under joint efforts of diligent people.
21. Good manners
Our manners not only mirror what kind of education we have had and what our social status is, but also reflect what our nature is. A person with good manners is always an agreeable companion, while a person with bad manners is disliked by the public.
Good manners mean politeness or good behaviour in social intercourse. Like customs, codes of politeness may vary from culture to culture, but politeness produces an universal effect: making others pleasant. A polite person is considerate, especially for the less able and the disabled. Where help is needed, he is always glad to lend a hand. For instance, he gives his seat to an aged person or a pregnant woman in the bus, or helps a blind person cross the street.
Politeness stems from good breeding and self-cultivation. A friendly greeting, a short expression of “please” or “thank you” reveals one’s internal spiritual world. If every individual has enough respect both for himself and others, the moral standards of our society will be heightened.
22. On Making Friends
There is an old saying which goes: “A man without a friend is only half a man.” This is true indeed. In society we all need help and comfort given by our friends especially when we are in difficulty. True friendship is like sound health, the value of which is seldom known until it is lost.
What is friendship? It is a one-to-one relationship that demands a keen awareness of the other person’s intellect, temperament and particular interests. Friendship, in contrast with kinship, invokes freedom of choice. A friend is someone who chooses and is chosen. Good friends share great loyalty and warmth of feeling, help encourage each other when needed. And between friends there is inevitably a kind of equality of give-and-take which is based on mutual trust and respect.
My principle of choosing friends is that we should choose those who are reliable, kind-hearted, selfless and always willing to render help. We should avoid the fair-weather friends because misfortune tests the sincerity of friends.
23. Misunderstanding We are living in a big human family where good relationships are indispensable. It is very important to have mutual understanding among people in order to keep and develop good relationships.
However, misunderstanding sometimes occurs in our daily life. Parents and teenagers often disagree about the amount of young people’s freedom and responsibility. Quarrels and conflicts among people are sometimes attributed to misunderstanding stemming from different tastes, habits and ways of thinking. And now with the advent of globalization, cultural shock is another factor that is likely to bring about misunderstanding among people from different cultures.
If I am misunderstood, I sometimes explain to the person who has misunderstood me. If it is difficult to explain clearly at once, I wait for a suitable time. There is a proverb which goes: “Time cures all things.” I believe that with sincerity and patience all misunderstandings can be resolved.
24.Money and Happiness
Some people say that money can bring happiness. It seems true in that with money people can live in big houses, buy beautiful cars, travel everywhere and enjoy any pleasure. But this is only materialistic happiness, which may become tiring and doesn’t last long.
What is real happiness? Real happiness is a kind of spiritual experience, which usually doesn’t come from material enjoyment, but from obsessive research, insistent pursuits and whole-hearted devotion to the happiness and well-being of others. This kind of happiness is perpetual, deeply felt, and never brought with money. It may drop on a person if he deserves it, but not necessarily on a millionaire, who may suffer from great poverty in spirits.
My attitude toward money is: if it is the payment of my work, I am glad to receive it and enjoy what it may bring to me. If the money comes dishonestly, I will definitely refuse it, because criminal feeling does more harm to one’s soul. As to happiness, I think behaving nobly and completing my responsibilities and duties will bring me real happiness. I also draw great pleasure from other’s happiness if it is the result of my efforts.
25.Some Bad Manners in Colleges
Manners are a tool to remind us of others around us. Our actions affect one anther; there is always give and take. However, rude manners on campus are now so commonplace that they are accepted behaviors. It seems that we are to become a society of people who think only of themselves.
Firstly, it is bad manners to come late to class. If you are late, an apology should be made to the teacher either at the time or after class. Secondly, it is bad manners to use your mobile phone in the classroom, for the ringing of the phone will disturb others. Thirdly, in examinations and in certain kinds of written work intended to measure students’ own progress, it is not only dishonest and foolish to help or ask help from another, but it is also thoughtless of real values.
In a crowded world, manners are of vital importance. We should realize that good manners can make our college life more pleasant, while bad manners are disgusting. A university is a large family. Every member should behave properly and contribute to creating comfortable and harmonious surroundings. It will benefit all of us.
26.
Facing Our Limitations
Every human being has his own strong points and weak points even some world famous geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Alva Adison and Albert Einstein had their own weaknesses. Therefore, we must accept ourselves with limitations.
To accept ourselves with our limitations means that we will recognize how variable and flexible our lives can be. The great thing about life is that as long as we live we have the privilege of growing. We can learn new skills, engage in new kinds of work, devote ourselves to new causes, make new friends, if only we will exercise a little initiative and refuse to become fixed and rigid.
Let us, then, learn how to accept ourselves--- accept the truth that we are capable in some directions and limited in others, and that once we know our weaknesses, we can learn to make weaknesses into strengths by having self-confidence in our ability to improve. For the greatest enemy to our success in college, to our search for the happy life, is to allow ourselves to think that we have developed our abilities and talents enough.
27. Cooperation and Competition One stick is easily broken, but a bundle of sticks will be hard to destroy, which remarkably reveals the importance of cooperation. No one can deny that the development of society is the result of successful cooperation of many people. On the other hand, competition is also indispensable, without which, there would be no improvement and progress in human life.
However, cooperation and competition are the two sides of a coin. Take a football game as an example. In order to win,one team fight fiercely against the other, but at the same time, the members within a team must cooperate closely. Without cooperation, any competition would end in failure, and without competition, people will have no impulse to advance rapidly.
People’s awareness of the importance of these two behaviors is crucial in guiding their performances in society. Besides, they’d better remember their weaknesses so that they can remain attached and devoted to their group in cooperation. While in competition, they should get fully motivated from the winning desire so as to exert all their potential to defeat others.
28. The Western Region Development
Western China has been an undeveloped area for a long time because of its remoteness, poor transportation, poor education and inadequate infrastructure construction. But it has abundant resources and a considerable industrial foundation, which provides infinite business opportunities with its huge potentiality. In order to make use of these advantages and prosper this area, the Chinese government has already begun implementing the strategy for a large-scale development of western China, shifting the focus of economic construction from the eastern to the western part of the country.
According to a decision made by the State Council on western development, “construction of highways is the key, and construction of railways, airports, pipelines of natural gas should also be strengthened. However, education should go first. Western development demands knowledge and talent, thus making education a matter of priority. Luckily, the related authorities have already paid much attention to the investment of education and have drawn up talent cultivation programs.
Considering its poor foundation, the education there needs a long time to improve. But the development can’t wait that long. As a university student of the 21st century, we should actively respond to the call of our country and devote ourselves to the western region development.
29. Helping Laid-off Workers
High unemployment of laid-off workers is an inevitable result of China’s transition from a planned economy to a market economy. The transition puts an end to many old types of jobs requiring little professional training. Meanwhile, most posts, especially those newly created, favour employees with better educational backgrounds and professional expertise. Therefore, laid-off workers need much help.
Among all the laid-off workers, jobless urban women deserve more concern. This is because most of them are poorly trained and do not have necessary qualifications for new jobs. In addition, it is hard for middle-aged women to get re-employed not only because of age, but also because of sexual discrimination.
I suggest that local governments explore new ways to encourage re-employment of laid-off workers, especially women. And effective steps should be taken, such as offering more training courses and establishing more community service centers to create more jobs for laid-off workers. Of course, laid-off workers should change their old attitudes and positively seek opportunities for re-employment.
30.Fighting against Crime
Nowadays the crime rate in some large cities seems to be on the rise. Citizens complain about the robberies taking place in their blocks and pick-pocketing in public places. Murders, burglaries and kidnaps are often reported in the press. Many people dare not walk alone in the streets at night because public security is poor.
Faced with criminals, different people take different attitudes towards them. Some become so frightened that they give up their resistance or turn a blind eye to the criminals. Others, on the other hand, are brave enough to fight against the criminals even at the risk of their own lives. They think it is their responsibility to fight against crimes and maintain public order.
My suggestions for improving public security are as follows: To begin with, law education should be popularized. Second, criminals, especially the most heinous ones, should be severely punished according to the law. Third, police service, especially police on patrol duty, should be strengthened. Finally, it is necessary to set up a foundation in every city and town to reward those who behave extraordinarily well. Only by doing so can we encourage healthy trends and check unhealthy ones.
31. Buying Lottery Tickets
With the introduction of sports and welfare lotteries, some people try their luck. They spend a lot of money on lottery tickets, regardless of their small income. They cherish the hope of winning the big prize and becoming a millionaire overnight.
However, other people believe that the probability of winning is too little. They think the mass media is misleading people by exaggerating the stories of winning a lottery. To most people, it is just a waste of money.
In my opinion, lottery may turn a person into a millionaire, but it may also make many well-off families penniless. We college students should not spend our small budget on it. What we should do is concentrate on our study, making every effort to acquire as much knowledge and skill as possible in order to serve the people better after graduation. Only by doing so can we live up to the expectations of the Party, of people, and of our parents.
32.The Craze for Keeping Pets
Nowadays, we can see many city dwellers walking their pet dogs on the pavements or in the parks. We can also see pet shops where many kinds of pet animals are sold including dogs, cats, monkeys, snakes, birds, even rats.
Some people believe pets are affectionate. They are obedient and loyal to their masters. As urban buildings keep us away from nature, more and more people like to enjoy the company of tame animals who can offer entertainment for people and relieve them of loneliness. However, many people are opposed to keeping pets, especially dogs in cities. Public sanitation is the first health concern. And rabies is threatening people’s lives because if a person is bitten by a rabid dog, he has literally little chance of surviving.
I think it is understandable that the lonely elderly keep pets as companions. As for the young, they should not spend so much time and money on pets. And it is not advisable that college students keep pets in their dorm rooms.
33. The Influence of Family and Friends on Teenagers
The process of growing up is very complex for every person. Among many factors influencing a person’s growth, there are two conspicuous ones: family and friends.
Some people believe that parents are the first teachers for a child who very often imitates them, and is likely to regard whatever the parents do as positive. In a sense, parental guidance shapes a child’s mind and character. It is a fact that those who are brought up in a good family tend to possess many virtues like honesty, diligence, ambition and courtesy.
However, some think as soon as a child becomes old enough to communicate with their peers, he begins having friends who sometimes influence him more than the family does. For example, juvenile delinquency may stem from bad company.
In may opinion, both of the influences are indispensable for children’s growth because the family offers us warmth and care, while friends give us strength and horizon. Of course, parents should set good examples for their children, and educate them to avoid bad company.
34.What Will WTO Bring Us?
After 15 years of difficult negotiations, China was finally admitted to the WTO on November 10, 2001. With the membership of a country that accounts for one quarter of the world’s population, the WTO will take a major step toward becoming a truly world organization. This will inevitably exert a widespread and far-reaching impact on China’s economy and on the world economy in the new century.
China’s access to the WTO is in line with its reform and opening-up policy and the goal of establishing a socialist market economic system. As China will liberalize its trade regions and open its doors to foreign investment, more and more foreign companies, from banks to movie studios, will come into China. Meanwhile, stronger competition will threaten to force China’s unprofitable companies out of business. In this sense, challenge and opportunity will coexist.
Having China in the WTO and subject to the same rules governing the rest of the countries will have a positive effect on the global economy. I believe China’s entry will strengthen the WTO and boost China’s development as long as our government will take effective measures to adapt China’s economy to the development of globalization.
35. Independence and Parental Support
It is reported that a college student accused her father of not covering her tuition and living expenses. But she lost the case, because, according to the Revised Marriage Law, anyone who has finished senior high school and is able to work has no right to demand parental support.
People may have different attitudes towards this rule. Some assume that young people should stand on their own. But most parents consider it their duty to support their children at college, for they believe doing part-time jobs interfere with students’ academic work. Some parental support may last long after their children get employed, because young employees’ salary is low.
In my opinion, I am applauding that young people’s independence is legalized by the law. People above 18 have no right to depend on parents. If parents are able and willing to help, children should feel grateful instead of taking it for granted. Moreover, it is a good idea to regard parents’ financial help as loan to the children. In that case the money will be returned and used to improve parents’ retired life. Anyhow, young people must acquire, as early as possible, the ability to survive, which can never be over-stressed.
36.Generation Gap
Generation gap refers to the distance and contradiction between the old and the young in human society. Young people are apt to disagree with the old in many ways, and the old often feel puzzled about the young’s behavior. This gap is wide and deep, and exists ever since the existence of human society.
However, generation gap is a natural social phenomenon. Different generations live in distinct ages, therefore what they see, think and do are quite different. Among these different factors, education as well as traditions, beliefs and outlooks of the world play a key role. So existence of the gap is objective and unavoidable. It is not the fault of any side.
To promote human progress, both generations are indispensable -- the old have precious experience and the young are energetic. If they combine their efforts, any miracle can be created. So people should try to bridge the gap by respecting each other, making more communications, and avoiding frictions. With the old guiding the young and the young cherishing suggestions of the old, the gap can be narrowed by and by,and our society will be developed rapidly.
37.Teen Drug Abuse
Teen drug abuse is a serious problem in some areas of our country. It does great harm to teenagers’ body and mind. Once caught in this evil trap, the individual becomes a living dead and his or her family have to suffer. On the other hand, teen drug abuse may be like an epidemic, and spread quickly among peers, the result of which is not only a tragedy to some families, but to the whole nation.
Causes of teen drug abuse are many, but the most important of all may be neglect of education from parents and teachers. If teenagers are clear about harmful consequences of drug abuse, they may keep away from it. Besides, young people’s spare time is a dangerous blank, which leaves chance to drug dealers. Also, curiosity, a typical quality of adolescence may probably lead them to the first taste or feel of it.
I think schools and families must emphasize drug education, and acquaint youth with bad effects of drug on human bodies. Another positive measure is to encourage teens to develop themselves all around, and strive to reach the goals they set for life. If a person is ambitious and full of love for life, he or she won’t be addicted to drug to torture himself.
38. The Only-Child Problem
Since the implementation of family planning in 1970s, the “one child per family” policy has made more and more single-child families in China. Living in the pool of excessive affection, most of children in these families have shown unfavorable signs of getting spoiled. Some parents try to satisfy every demand of their kids no mater how unreasonable their requests are, thus turning them into “flowers in the nursery” that cannot bear any hardship or difficulty. Children from the only-child families are known to be self-centered and dependent.
On the contrary, some parents expect too much from their children. They believe in the old saying “Spare the rod, spoil the child”, and they are too strict with their children by forcing them to learn all sorts of things, such as music, dancing, painting, English, and math even though they have shown absolutely no interest in what they are learning. This not only puts much pressure on children, which may hinder the development of their personality but also severely destroys their interest in learning.
In order to help the only-child in each family develop into a wholesome
person, I think, parents should learn that it does no good to their children if they
overprotect them. Having a loving heart for the child is not enough; they should
know the art of love. On the one hand, children should be encouraged to be in
dependent and to do what they can. On the other hand, they should be guided not
forced to learn.
39.
A Boom in Traveling Abroad
To some Chinese, the dream of visiting foreign countries has become true. Recent years have seen an increasing number of Chinese people go to America, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia to widen their horizons and know about customs and cultures overseas.
This newly risen boom is not accidental. It results from several factors. Thanks to the reform and open-door policy, some people have their own companies and many others earn a good salary. The annual income of 20--30 thousand yuan, apart from covering their living expenses, enables them to pay a visit abroad. Also playing a part is the reduction of working hours. People now have more leisure time than before and they begin to think of more interesting ways to spend their holidays rather than stay at home watching TV.
Making a trip to foreign countries means more than going abroad. For one thing, it shows that the developing China is growing richer and stronger. For another, it proves the wiseness and success of China's reform since 1978. With the better increase in economy, more and more Chinese people will go sightseeing abroad, making every corner in the world feel the great changes and influence of China.
40. What Is True Beauty?
In recent years, with the development of beauty industry, an increasing number of people are willing to endure the pain of going under a knife to improve their looks. According to the news media, plastic surgery has made many women look not so ugly, and produced some plastic beauties.
Beauty is something that we can recognize instinctively. Being pretty --- or just not ugly --- confers enormous genetic and social advantages. Attractive people, especially women, are judged to be more intelligent and sexy. They are more likely to marry, to find good jobs and earn more. Good looks are believed to be women’s most valuable asset, exchangeable for social position, money, even love. This is why beauty salons are thriving.
Everybody desires to be beautiful. However, inner beauty is true beauty. It is understandable that women use some cosmetics, but beauty and health are interlinked. If facials are necessary, they should be combined with diets and exercise classes.
41.Sandstorm and Environmental Preservation
It was reported that on December 31, 2000, the first massive sandstorm hit northern China in decades. Since then, there has been one every month. Sandstorms are fierce winds that carry yellow sand and spread it all over the areas they pass by. When it comes, a whole city may seem to be enveloped in a mess of dense dust. After each attack, pollution of air and water is aggravated, transportation is held up, and daily life is in a mess.
In these times, people wonder: is it a phenomenon forced on human beings purely by Nature? No. It is just man himself that brings trouble on himself. Among the causes, excessive herding and unrestricted farming are the key ones, which speed up desertification.
Since the causes of sandstorm are clear, the resolution is also clear: protecting the environment as if it is our eyes. Herding and farming should be planned in consideration of preservation and re-utilization of natural resources. Otherwise, the doomsday of the earth is numbered.
42. Development and Environmental Protection
It is common knowledge to everyone that the natural environment is vitally important to human beings. Without air, humans can remain alive no more than a few minutes. Without forests, the earth would be turned into desert, on which nothing could grow.
However, many people do not care for this dear globe. As a result of rapid development due to careless consideration, our environment has been affected greatly. Rivers are made dirty due to release of waste and poisonous affluent from factories; farming land is occupied by more and more buildings; a large number of species have become extinct.
It is true that human development has some side-effects on the environment, but these can be diminished to minimum. If all the people have a high sense of environmental protection, they can think of many ways to take care of it, even at great expense. With the advance of science and the heightening of consciousness of the whole population, our globe may be maintained as well as it used to be.
43.
Healthy Diet
On healthy diet, there are various ideas, one of which is of a simple summary: no matter when and how you eat, you must eat something from each of the following five groups of food daily: meat, dairy, grains, fruit and vegetables. Only in this way can people get balanced nutrition which is essential to their health.
Some people don’t believe in healthy diet. They eat what they like and avoid those unpleasant to their tastes. The results of this are usually tragic: they suffer from diseases. For example, Americans eat much meat and sugar; therefore they have high rates of cancer and heart disease. Another harm caused by unbalanced food is ill development of children’s bodies: some may be too thin, some too fat.
My diet is not very healthy. It is not because I lack knowledge of nutrition, but because I have no strong will to control myself. I like sweet food very much and can seldom resist its temptation. As a result, I am over weighted. I am going to change my eating habit and stick to healthy diet, so that I can enjoy a happy life for many years.
44. Is Our Food Really “Green”?
Now, fears of food-linked diseases seem to have raised new awareness of eating habits and most people believe that having green food is one of the best ways to be rid of the problems. As a result, more and more vegetables and meat labeled as “green food” can be found nearly everywhere.
But is the green food really “green”? As we know green food refers to the kind of food that is good to people’s health with its characteristics of high quality, low levels of pollution. In some big stores and supermarkets, we can see that this kind of food is usually specially packed with detailed specifications and the price is much higher than the same kind of food produced in the traditional way. The green food there seems reliable because of the fame these big stores and supermarkets have. But as to the so-called “green food” found at some dirty places with its consumers suffering from diseases, its real values are really doubtful. Many surveys and reports show that a large amount of green food in China now is fake green food.
In order to ensure that all green products be manufactured under required conditions, our government must take strong measures from all sides to initiate and promote the idea of green food. Meanwhile the government should demand that the strict standard for determining green food be enforced so as to stick to high quality.
45. What Should We Prepare to Do for the 2008 Olympics?
Beijing has successfully won the bid to host the 2008 Olympics. This is not merely an honor, it is a political conquest in global recognition. It also increases revenue from the influx of tourists, participants and Olympic related paraphernalia.
The capital is expecting to pour billions of dollars into sports facilities and related improvements of roads, public transport, landscaping and sanitation. For the ancient city of Beijing, the Olympics is an opportunity for urban renewal. And many family homes will have to move to the outskirts so as to give way to make room for the Olympic Village and other buildings. Thus many citizens will begin a new life.
Far-sighted urban planning and stringent regulations such as building restrictions should be worked out in order to create a good environment both for the Olympics and for the new community. And the future use of the sports facilities after the Olympics should also be taken into consideration. Of course, improving public morality standards is also important.
46. Science and Human Life
Science and technology have come to pervade every aspect of our lives and, as a result, the quality of human life has been greatly improved and society is changing at a speed which is quite unexpected. The great technological advance has been freeing vast numbers of people from their traditional bondage to nature, and from fears based on want.
However, science may also bring us disasters. An atomic bomb, for instance, can destroy thousands and thousands of lives in a few seconds. Fertilizers and pesticides, if over-used, can pollute the environment. Therefore, we can say science is a double-edged sword which can be used equally for good or evil.
It might be reasonable to conclude that with the advance of science, we can look forward to greater conveniences and comforts which, even today, seem quite unimaginable. While taking advantage of the benefits, we should spare no effort to prevent the wrong use and side effects so as to minimize disasters.
47.Owning a Car
China has now developed into a period of possessing private cars by individuals. In big or small cities, on highways or country roads, private cars are racing by outstandingly alongside with public ones. There are more brand-new cars taking their owners to various touring reserves during holidays as well as to their work-places.
Owning a car has many advantages. You can go anywhere at any time and at your own disposal. It saves much time, the value of which is fully appreciated by businessmen. Moreover, traveling in one’s own car over long or short distances is nothing but an enjoyment with air-conditioner, comfortable seat and pleasant music. However, private cars also produce many problems, such as air pollution, traffic jam, gas shortage and over weight to car owners. Needless to say, it is costly to maintain, repair and insure a car. Spiritually, driving a car needs much attention, quick response and great consciousness, which result in great worries and stress.
Nothing is perfect at its birth. The same is true of private cars. People are confident that resolutions of problems caused by private cars are sure to be found with rapid advance in science and technology.
48
The Mobile Phone
Nowadays, more and more people are using mobile phones. In the street, on a bus, in a restaurant, actually in every other public places, you can hear someone speaking with a mobile phone. Many college students have their mobile phones, too.
The mobile phone is so popular because of many reasons. First of all, it is a very useful communication tool. When you are out and you need to contact someone urgently, a mobile phone will enable you to do this if there is no telephone booth nearby. A beeper is not always sufficient for your purposes. Second, it is a fashionable product which many youths want to have. Mobile phone manufacturers have used famous stars as their propagandists. At last, the prices of mobile phones are dropping as a result of the technological development.
Ordinary people can afford a mobile phone now. It is getting more and more accepted by the common public.
However, the mobile phone can also become a nuisance sometimes. In a classroom when everybody is taking an important exam, the ring of a mobile phone causes some kind of sound pollution. Those who have mobile phones should avoid disturbing others in public places..

50. A Letter of Complaint Dear editor:
A loyal reader of your newspaper, I am writing to report to you the seriousness of environmental pollution in our residential quarter and hope to get help from you.
I live on the river bank in Nangang District where there used to be beautiful scenery. The river was clean and the air fresh. All the residents relished the walk and exercise they take in the morning and evening there.
Unfortunately, since a number of restaurants and night clubs were set up along the river, all has been changed. Now the riverside is no longer a good place for us to take a walk because the effluents from the restaurants have all been directly released into the river, making it smell bad. In addition, the disgusting smoke and deafening noise produced by them force all the windows shut even in hot summer days.
As you can imagine, all the residents in this neiborhood have suffered a lot. We cannot afford to stand by and watch the further deterioration of the environment. Something ought to have been done to find a reasonable solution to this problem by controlling the effluents of the restaurants and closing some of them which are primarily responsible for the contamination.
It will be appreciated if you consider it and help with this matter.
Sincerely yours,
Wang Li

51. Some Don’ts in Getting Along with Americans
March 9, 2004
Dear Xinchao,
You have asked me for suggestions on how to get along with Americans. I have to give advice, but I have found the following “don’ts” helpful.
First, never ask Americans their age --- especially women. Everyone in the US wants to be young. Second, don’t tell heavy people they are fat because fatness does not mean happiness as in China. If you tell the fat people they are losing weight, they will be pleased because almost all of them are weight-conscious and want to be thin. Third, don't’ be late for appointments, because Americans value time and expect every one to be punctual for the appointment. Lastly, if you want to smoke in the presence of others, you’d better ask for permission first, like “Do you mind my smoking here?” Besides, offering cigarettes to strangers is hardly considered a sign of friendliness in the US.
As the proverb goes, “Do in Rome as the Romans do.” The above-mentioned don’ts are only for your reference and I believe you’ll find more don’ts if you personally have the opportunity to get along with Americans and, of course, with westerners.
With best regards.
Cordially yours,
Handel

54. Rapid Development of Tourism in China
The above graphs display the rapid development of China’s tourist industry with the growth in the number of tourists, and the increase in tourist earnings.
We can see during the period from 1978 to 2001 China witnessed a dramatic development in tourism. The two graphs indicated a great increase in the number of tourists from 0.75 million to 200 million, an increase of over 266 times. In the same period, tourist earnings rose from 260 million to 70 billion, up 269 times.
There are several factors attributed to the booming tourist industry in China. First, with the improvement of living standards, Chinese people have had money to spend on leisure activities. Second, the “holiday economy” has become the impetus for fast-growing tourism. The three week-long holidays --- the National Day Holiday, the Spring Festival Holiday and the May Day Holiday --- have also provided better business opportunities for the tourist industry, thus pushing up domestic demand. Finally, thanks to a marked improvement of tourist services and facilities, people now have found it easier and more convenient to tour than ever before.
55. Enlarge Our Vocabulary
As is shown in the figure, there are four types of vocabulary: listening, speaking, reading and writing. We increase our listening vocabulary through what we hear by means of television, radio, family, teachers, classmates and so forth. Meanwhile, our reading vocabulary grows when we learn new words from books, magazines, newspapers or the Internet. And our speaking and writing vocabulary develops as we learn to use in communication what we have accumulated through listening and reading.
Both listening and reading involve actively receiving new information, which forms the basis of the development of speaking and writing vocabulary. Therefore, the more we learn through listening and reading, the larger vocabulary we can build for communication.
There is an old saying which goes: “Practice makes perfect.” Facts show that practice aids us in enlarging our vocabulary and in developing our ability to communicate. There is no short-cut in language learning, and the success lies in persistence in practising listening, reading, speaking and writing as much as possible.
56.Single-Parent Families in the USA These two pie graphs indicate the changes of the percentage of single-parent families in the United States in 1970 and 1990.
The graphs show that in 1970, 87.1 percent of families with children had two parents in the household. By 1990, this percentage had fallen to 71.9. Thus the number of single-parent families was growing rapidly, and almost one-third of children in the USA in 1990 lived in this kind of families. Generally speaking, single parenthood --- six times as common among women as among men --- may result from divorce, wars, or the desire to have a child without marriage which is morally unacceptable to Oriental cultures.
Most research suggests that growing up in a broken family can have negative effects on children. Divorce is hardest on children, leaving emotional scars in their minds. What is more, broken families may encourage other social problems, including poverty, welfare dependency, crime and drug abuse, thus threatening social stability.
57. Man and Nature These two graphs indicate the change of relationship between man and nature, and the importance of ecological preservation.
From Graph A we can see, to our earlier ancestors, nature seemed vast, chaotic and implacable. Wild lands were full of fierce animals, evil spirits and wildness chaos while the city was a sacred place of comfort, peace and order. However, with the development of human civilization, cities and domesticated landscapes have expanded and wildness has diminished as shown in Graph B. As a result, now we see the remaining remnants of wild nature as endangered enclaves of paradise while the city symbolizes chaos, evil and danger.
Humans have struggled to control the forces of nature and to create havens of comfort and security. But at the same time, we have disrupted the ecosystem. Increasingly, we find nature is threatened and vulnerable, and man has the potential to be both creater and destroyer. Now we are facing this question: will we learn from the past mistakes and preserve nature, or will we continue to consume, destroy and waste both natural and human resources? The answer, of course, is the former.
58. Jobs and Environment The cartoon tells us this story: A lumberman has cut down the last big tree in the forest. He is overjoyed that he has fulfilled the task at last. Unexpectedly, he gets fired instead of reward.
The cartoon also suggests some implications. First, logging jobs will disappear and it will be hard for people who are employed in the timber industry to make a living. Second, since all the ancient forests disappear, the ecosystem is destroyed and the balance of nature is broken. Thus humans will face global climate warming. Third, with the disappearance of tropical forests, the timber prices will rise, which will have negative impacts on other industries.
Forests represent a valuable natural resource and play a vital role in regulating climate, controlling water runoff and providing shelter and food for wildlife. So we have to stop this kind of deforestation and protect them. Effective steps should be taken including the preservation of ancient forests and wildlife in them, afforestation, planned cutting and punishment for severe deforestation. We should realize that we do all these things not only for ourselves but also for future human generations.
59. I’ve Got a Diploma, Too
The cartoon shows that a hen is making a display of her diploma. It is ridiculous that a hen is fond of a diploma from a swimming university. Obviously, the painter of the cartoon is trying to criticize some phenomenon in our society in which having a college diploma is an indispensable pass to employment and promotion.
Normally, a diploma is noting but a certificate issued by a school or college, indicating graduation or conferring a degree. It does not necessarily testify to the capability of its holder. However, some employers overstress educational backgrounds of the candidates and overlook their practical capability before admission, only to find some of the employees are incompetent for the posts. Besides, the current pay system and the way of evaluation of professional titles in China’s state enterprises and public institutions also contribute to the diploma abuse.
Diploma abuse has aroused much concern from the public. It encourages cheating, bribery and corruption. Also, it devalues diplomas and provides the soil for crime. Some lawbreakers dare to put up ads in the streets for their fake certificates of various kinds, making it difficult for people to distinguish the true certificates from the fake ones. No doubt, the police should strengthen its fight against this evil trend.
60. Food Waste
Nowadays we feel it hard to ignore the fact that our dorms, dining halls or even our classroom buildings are sometimes littered with leftovers of food, such as noodles, rice, steamed bread and so on. After each meal dustbins in our school canteen are always full of wasted food. It is surprising that our students seem to forget that China is still having great difficulty in feeding the largest population in this world.
China now is raising 22 percent of the world's total population on 7 percent of the world's farmland. To grow enough grain to feed her population is always the first consideration in her economic development. When we eat our food, we cannot but think of this heavy task we Chinese people have to bear and the labor our farmers have to deliver each day in the fields. "Think twice before you throw away your food", "Be diligent and economical" should be kept in our minds.
To make our students more aware of the urgent need to save food is the first thing we should do. We can launch a campaign, such as "The Week of Saving Food" on our campus, or a variety of other activities, such as lectures on Chinese Population and Their Future, or an exhibition displaying wasted food. On the other hand, our canteen's services should be improved, cooking facilities should be renewed so that our students have a good appetite for our canteen's food products.
