Question of the Day: How Many Cylinders Will Your Next Engine Have?Written By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: Question of the Day March 27th, 2008 6:00 PM 47 Comments

Today we learned that Americans are buying cars with four-cylinder engines in increasing numbers. With gas prices high and climbing, we can’t say that we disagree with that logic. When it comes time for your next car will the motor powering it have four, six, or eight cylinders? Will fuel economy force your hand, or are other factors at play? Tell us about your purchasing plans, in comments.

And Behold, It Was Very Good: 2010 Hyundai Genesis CoupeWritten By: Winding Road StaffFiled Under: All News, Coupes, Hyundai, Winding Road Features March 27th, 2008 5:00 PM 2 Comments

In the beginning, Hyundai built cheap cars. U.S. drivers said they were good (enough) and bought many. But the tinny Excels broke and quit running. Then Americans stopped buying them. Thus went Hyundai’s first decade in the American market.

Caparo Planning Two New ModelsWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Future Vehicles, Small-Volume/Coachbuilt, Super Cars March 27th, 2008 4:00 PM 1 Comment

British boutique builders Caparo are responsible for the bonkers T1 track special, but they also played a hand in the remarkably cheap (and slow) Tata Nano microcar. That diversity of vision should serve the company well, as it has espoused plans to develop a set of new and diverse vehicles.
Caparo would like to begin with a slightly more useable version of the T1, though exactly how useable remains to be seen. Company head Angad Paul is said to be keeping his lips sealed on the project for now.
The second, and perhaps even more exciting idea, has the company building a small city car that makes use of advance materials and packaging to save on weight. Caparo is supposedly targeting Smart’s ForTwo and similarly sized vehicles, but would like to show an increase in efficiency through reduced mass. To that end, Paul points out that “The carbon fiber route is not just for expensive cars.” Interesting stuff.

Woman Lucks Out by Giving Birth in Auto Parts Store Parking LotWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Etc., Maintenance March 27th, 2008 2:00 PM 4 Comments

While most auto parts stores are staffed with employees who can help you change a light bulb or replace a bad battery, we wouldn’t really recommend checking them out for emergency medical attention. But a Cocoa, Florida woman didn’t have much choice when she pulled into the neighborhood Advanced Auto Parts store parking lot, as she was on the verge of giving birth.
A passing customer saw the woman ready to deliver in her car, and ran inside the auto store to look for help. Assistant managers Nicole Laskowski and Christine Hartman called 911, and then ran outside to assist the woman.

Lamborghini Ends Gallardo Superleggera ProductionWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Lamborghini, Plants/Manufacturing, Super Cars March 27th, 2008 1:00 PM 3 Comments

Light weight, buttoned-up, and faster than hell, the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera is now on its way to being a very tasty footnote in the history of the storied automaker. Lamborghini has finished production on the stripped down super car, recently sending the very last batch of Superleggeras to dealers.
Just 172 examples of the Gallardo specials were made, with the bulk ordered in orange (46 examples) or yellow (45). Ten special customers took delivery of white Superleggeras, ensuring days of detail cleaning after manly jobs like driving the albino bulls through the hills after a rain. Time well spent.
Bid farewell to the Gallardo Superleggera with a browse through the gallery below.

Like Nothing Else: World’s Largest Coffee-Table Book Features Hummer H2Written By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Hummer, Sport Utility Vehicles March 27th, 2008 12:00 PM 12 Comments

In a move that we’re sure will astound and delight true fans of the Hummer brand everywhere, a new coffee-table book designed to truly capture the magnitude of the H2 is headed to American stores this April.
Measuring 17 x 25 inches, and weighing 17 pounds, Hummer H2 – King Size America is a book that faithfully represents the size of the giant SUV it’s written for. In fact, one fold-out section of the Hummer book measures out wider (at 94.5 inches, pictured above) than the H2 itself. The excesses of King Size America don’t end with physical size either, the book is set to be published in an edition of only 999 copies, and costs a massive 999 euros (no U.S. pricing has been announced).
That giant price tag buys readers a sequentially numbered and signed copy of the book, which is filled with 200 glossy pages of unique Hummer photos, and stories from German auto journalist Hans-Juergen Tuecherer. Customers can even request that the tome be personalized with an H2 owner’s name, license plate, and VIN number.

Because none of us can get quite enough information about Gran Turismo 5 Prologue before the game is released on April 15, we’d like to further tantalize with another smoking trailer. While the video above features plenty of action (and another through the link), we are especially keen on the bit that involves stepping behind the wheel of Ferrari’s F40. Just over two-weeks to go.

Mercedes-Benz to Get New Design ChiefWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Design, Hirings/Firings/Personnel Moves, Mercedes-Benz March 27th, 2008 10:00 AM 1 Comment

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it will soon be making a change at the top end of its design team, replacing current head man Peter Pfeiffer (pictured) when he enters retirement sometime around the middle of this year.
Pfeiffer will be followed up by Gordon Wagener, who currently runs the Mercedes design studios in California and Japan. The 39-year-old Wagener is also presently responsible for Mercedes’ strategic advanced design program.
Set to turn 65 this year, Pfeiffer has worked at Mercedes-Benz since 1968, and has served as design chief for the company since 1999.

What’s Under the Hood? Four-Cylinder Engines Becoming Increasingly PopularWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, Car Buying/Consumer Info., Trends March 27th, 2008 9:00 AM 22 Comments

Though the conclusion is one that could perhaps have been guessed at using first-hand data collected at one’s local gas station, J.D. Power has released a compilation of statistics that tell us Americans are choosing more four-cylinder engines.
The smaller displacement and more fuel efficient engines are powering an ever larger percentage of cars on the road these days, and could be the number one customer choice in short order. Four-cylinder motors accounted for more than one-third of the cars sold in the first quarter of 2008, for a total of 37.9 percent of sales. That’s up 6.8 percent from 2003.

Hamilton Promised Rare McLaren LM for TitleWritten By: Seyth MiersmaFiled Under: All News, History, Motorsports, Super Cars March 27th, 2008 8:00 AM 8 Comments

Lewis Hamilton would seem to have just a bit more incentive than the rest of the Formula One field while fighting for the 2008 championship, as the McLaren driver has been promised a very special bonus if he can bring home the title.
British newspaper The Sun is reporting that McLaren chief Ron Dennis has promised Hamilton an ultra-rare version of the McLaren F1 super car, the LM, if he wins a world championship this season and helps the McLaren team win a constructors title. Hamilton has reportedly been smitten with the F1 LM, built to celebrate the McLaren F1 GTR’s which won at Le Mans in 1995, since the first time he saw one ten years ago.
“When I first went to McLaren it was there and I fell in love with it,” said Hamilton.
While it’s not unusual for F1 teams to outfit their drivers with special edition or expensive wheels, the McLaren F1 LM falls into a distinctly rare class. The LM’s were built to be the ultimate road-going versions of the legendary F1, with 165 pounds shaved off the standard car, as well as a bevy of uprated components. With only five examples of the car ever built they’re a bit on the spendy side too, valued at around $4 million.
